“Sustainability is no longer about doing less harm, it’s about doing more good”
Developing a sense of one’s own role in sustainable and inclusive global development can best be taught at the primary education level. Young children are generally open minded and receptive in taking new knowledge, attitudes and behaviour. It is actually not the adults of today who desperately need the transformative shift, but the adults of tomorrow who today need to acquire the competences that will make them create a better day than what we have done. This is the most sustainable approach. With this thought in mind, Ahlcon International School celebrated its first ever virtual ‘SDG-Fest -2020’ on 25th September,2020 to mark the fifth anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals , with unprecedented fervour and zeal. Chief Guest- Shri S. N. Sahu -an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda, Guests of Honour Mr. Venugopal Dharamranjan and Rabbi Maleker, Director Ahlcon group of schools, Dr. Ashok Kumar Pandey, Principals of both the Ahlcon Schools-Mr. Sanjay Yadav and Dr. Deepak Bisht and also the Principals of participating schools graced the ceremony with their presence.
The event was a catalyst in spreading awareness regarding SDG goals through carefully designed activities. In this mega event, approx. 145 students from 40 schools of Delhi/ NCR submitted their online entries for the activities of primary classes which were as follows: -
•CLASS 1- FASHIONISTA

Now the SDGs are a part of our DNA.” ‘Action is the need of the hour’, said the Chief guest Mr. S. N. Sahu and eminent speakers reiterated the urgency of achieving the goal by making all possible efforts to bring SDGs in every action for our planet.

Coronavirus has put us all into doubt and the constant news about the pandemic is making us feel anxious and stressed. All of this is taking toll on mental health and have increased stress and anxiety levels in childrenin an unprecedented way.
Students are experiencing higher levels of uneasiness while struggling to cope with new ways of learning and feeling connected to others. There is disruption of normal activities like the sudden split from friends, including not being able to go to school, the park, play area and seeing the effects of stress on their parents and family members. Children might not find easy to deal with these changes. So, to support the children and empathetically handling these changes through psychosocial support, around 50 teachers of primary section of Ahlcon International School conducted the story telling sessions on the occasion of World Mental Health Day. Teachers shared many stories on emotional and mental well -being with students through videos, audios, and narration with props. At the end, there was an interactive session in which students shared their own experiences with their teachers and peers. Many parents also attended the session with their wards and highly appreciated the efforts of the teachers in dealing with the issues related to their child’s mental well-being.
All the concerns and queries of the students were answered and they were reassured that it is just a temporary phase and a beautiful way to spend time with their parents and family members. They were asked to take care of their eating habits and sleep patterns.
Principal, Mr. Sanjay Yadav addressed all the students and asked them to set up a robust routine to manage all the activities and take care of themselves. Headmistress Ms. Anju advised parents to look for emotional cues and talk to their child regarding the same as creating experiences with mindfulness will ensure children’s emotional and psychological well-being are safeguarded at all times.
“Peace is the most powerful weapon of mankind. It takes more courage to take a blow than to give one.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi.
Gandhi Jayanti on October 2nd, is the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the pioneer of truth and non-violence. He is known as the ‘Father of the Nation’. This day is observed as a National Holiday all-over India, as a tribute to him and has also been declared as the ‘International Day of Non-Violence’ by the ‘United Nations General Assembly’ held on 15thJune 2007.
The man who is revered all over the world as one of history’s most transformative and inspirational figure, is a great inspiration for the youth of India. The Gandhian philosophy and principles can contribute significantly to the efforts towards SDGs. He was such a visionary that when the term ‘Sustainable Development’ was not in vogue, he had defined and shown ways for it without even referring to it.
To commemorate the 151stbirth anniversary of the father of nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and to instil the fervour of patriotism in young Ahlconites, a special assembly was conducted in the Pre-Primary and the Primary Section of Ahlcon International School, on 1stOctober, 2020.
It was celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm, for the first time ever on the digital platform in the virtual classes. The students threw light on Gandhi Ji’s invaluable contribution in India’s freedom struggle and how his principles of truth, non-violence and cleanliness are still remembered and practiced today.
The assembly began by paying respect through the song, ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’, which aptly matches with the principles of our ‘Father of the Nation’. Students promised to abide by the campaign- ‘Swachhta Hi Sewa Abhiyan’, with the pledge to keep the school, home and city clean.
Other than this, numerous activities to promote values of non-violence, harmony and brotherhood among the students, were conducted class wise as follows :
Little children of class 1, narrated stories from Gandhi ji’s life and recited inspiring poems. They explained the essence of Gandhi Ji’s monkeys and enjoyed drawing two things associated to him – the charkha and the specs. The activity was organized to assimilate and give knowledge about Gandhi ji and his teachings which were also associated with the SDGs.
The children of class 2 enthusiastically made small video clips demonstrating how they are incorporating the spirit of ‘Gandhism’ in their day to day life, especially in these testing times of pandemic. They also understood that ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’ after watching a video during the assembly. Some of them displayed how Swachh Bharat is a critical area of concern for every day’s life and how it impacts the environment and well-being of every human being.
Next, the children of class 3, in their virtual class, made posters on different topics connecting to Gandhiji’s life. Posters were made on ‘Clean India’, ‘Peace in the World’, ‘Teachings of the three Monkeys’ and last but not the least ‘sketches of Gandhi ji with his quotes’. These posters give a deep insight into the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi and his vision of ‘Swachch Bharat’.
The Students of class 4 organized an online event ‘मैं भी गाँधी – एक नयी सोच’. Gandhiji had influenced thousands of people through his ideals of non- violence, brotherhood, charity, equality, respect to elders, devotion to work and nation and most importantly, peace. Students spoke about Mahatma Gandhi as their role model in short video clips. They talked about the relevance of his teachings in the present context and how we can imbibe these values in our lives.
The senior most class of the primary school, made posters and models such as : 1) Storyboard- Motivational anecdotes with pictures of Gandhi Ji. 2) Collage- Independence Movements of Gandhi Ji 3) Quotes- Inspiring quotes of Gandhi Ji 4) Poster- As a student, your contribution towards Clean India Campaign 5) Best out of waste – Making small models of objects associated with Gandhi ji, like cap, spectacles, charkha etc. 6) Teachings of the three monkeys of Gandhi Ji and introduction of the 4th monkey and its teaching in today’s scenario.
The students enthusiastically participated in these activities that enabled them understand the value of virtues that help in peaceful co-existence of both people and nations together. The virtual special assembly and conduction of activities was great success. The Headmistress, Ms. Anju Gupta, graced the moment by virtually visiting all the classes and encouraging the children for their wonderful performances and creativity. It was indeed an enlightening moment as she also motivated the children to imbibe the teachings of the great Mahatama in their lives and emphasised how different UN SDGs are also based on the principles of Gandhiji.

at times with the world to enjoy your own company” so that you are
self-aware, confident, and spread positivity all around. She appealed to the
world at large to become global citizens and ensure peaceful co-existence of
all life forms.
(Discussion with Ms. Gail Davvis on International Youth Day session-2)
The
lockdown due to COVID-19 has taken a toll on everybody's mental health. While quarantining adults has generally led to negative
psychological effects, including confusion, anger, and post-traumatic distress,
studies have shown that children and adolescents are
more likely to experience high rates of depression, trauma, obsessive compulsive
disorder and anxiety during and after enforced isolation ends.
Mental health of the students is the topic of interest
throughout the world. The entire performance of a child depends on his/her mental
health. Till date there is no proven treatment to manage the Novel corona virus
disease. The entrance examinations were postponed, the admissions were stopped
due to the lockdown. In this context many students were undergoing stress and
there is a strong need to consider their mental health status. So, to discuss
about the pre and post COVID life, how it has affected the education community
and the awareness of UN Sustainable Development Goals, Section head, teachers
and students from Ahlcon International School participated in a discussion on 16th
Aug, 2020 initiated by Ms. Gail Davvis, Co-curator, TheCreators2030
UN SDGs Art Initiative. Mr. Puneet Duggal (HM, Senior Section), Ms. Anju Gupta
(HM, Primary Section), Ms. Sunita Rajiv (AHM, Middle Section) , Ms. Monika
Sawhney (Librarian) , Ms. Gargi Thakur (Teacher) and. Ms. Asavri Verma &
Akshara Nair (Sudents) shared their views and expressed their opinions on a
variety of issues.
Ms. Gail initiated the discussion by asking about
the effect of COVID-19 on everybody's personal and professional lives. Ms. Anju
shared about the changes in the daily routine, the adaptation of technology to
continue with the online classes, training of teachers and taking parent on
board through orientations. Ms. Sunita talked about the support from the
management and the planning done by the teachers regarding lesson plans, time
table, classes and how the staff members worked collaboratively in getting over
through the short comings. Mr. Puneet discussed about the reaction and feedback
of the parents about the virtual classes, the trust shown by them towards the
institution and how the whole process empowered the students. Ms. Gargi and Ms.
Monika talked about the variety of activities like podcasts, videos, audios, special
assemblies, book week, celebration of days like Earth Day, that were done during
the virtual classes to maintain the interest of the students. Last but not the
least, Akshara and Asavri shared how the social isolation affected the mental
and emotional health causing anxiety disorder, restlessness among the high school
students but also how it brought a positive change in their personal lives. The
opportunity to spend quality time with the family members, talking to them
about the fears and vulnerabilities, a chance to develop new hobbies, to
continue with the passion of writing poems, painting, music, sharing about the
new normal with the friends helped them to come in terms with the whole
pandemic situation. The teachers shared how various practices like gratitude,
kindness, meditation, emotional intelligence sessions helped children in
changing their mindset towards the whole scenario and built a sense of relief
and positive attitude in them.
The discussion
was concluded by Ms. Anju Gupta's message to all the educators across the world
by appreciating the noble jobs they are doing and calling them 'Corona Angels'
for keeping the learning alive. She also said that the online teaching learning
should continue and the one precious year of the child should not be wasted.
(Discussion
with Ms. Gail Davvis on
International Youth Day session-1)
World’s public landscape has
transformed dramatically over the last couple of months, with the most
prolonged lockdown that the present generation can remember. With the closure
of schools, colleges, offices, millions of people were effectively confined to
their homes worldwide. The
isolation and fear in this lockdown era has driven an escalating nervousness
among many people. This situation has produced a
notable emotional impact on the general population, especially the students with
symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression.
To talk about the effect of lockdown on mental
health of children and youth and the various mechanisms opted by the teachers
and management of Ahlcon International School to deal with this situation, Ms.
Anju Gupta (Headmistress, Primary Section) and Ms. Gargi Thakur (Teacher) participated
in a discussion initiated by Ms. Gail Davvis, Co-curator, TheCreators2030 UN
SDGs Art Initiative, Mexico on the occasion of International Youth Day Week on
13th Aug, 2020. Ms. Nicole, a student and youth ambassador of
TheCreators2030 UN SDGs Art Initiative also shared her views.
On being asked about the reaction of parents on
closure of schools and how this situation was tackled by the management and
teachers, Ms. Anju explained the steps taken like technical training of staff
members to use online tools for conducting virtual classes, taking parents on
board through orientations and sending them important advisories regarding
netiquettes, providing pdfs of course books, organizing workshops, proper
planning of lesson plans and much more. Ms. Gargi talked about the doubts and fears of
the students regarding the COVID-19, how it affected their mental health and
finally how this was managed by involving them into various innovative
activities and assignments based on Sustainable Development Goals and themes
like life skills and moral values. Ms. Nicole, a high school student shared her
life experiences of pre and post covid, how she missed being in touch with her
peers and teachers and its effect on the academics.
Ms. Anju Gupta also shared how the mental health
of both students and teachers is being taken care of through the wellness
period, physical fitness sessions, asynchronous classes, reduction in
curriculum and screen time. Ms. Gargi discussed about the various activities
being done to create awareness about the SDGs like Green Tiffin Campaign,
Eco-Friendly Birthdays, Say no to plastic, Save Water Program etc. followed by
the sharing of work done by Ms. Gail and Ms. Nicole like providing organic
food, working on inner leadership program, sustainable business development
advice as a part of their UN SDGs Art Initiative.
The discussion was also joined by Ms. Sunita
Rajiv (AHM, Middle School) who expressed her views on the topic and highlighted
the integration of SDGs in the regular curriculum. Ms. Aastha Gupta (German
Language Expert) appreciated the efforts of all the stakeholders in the smooth
functioning of the teaching- learning process.
In the end Ms. Davvis congratulated all the
speakers for the work done in empowering the students and bringing a positive
change in the community in these crucial times. She also talked about women
empowerment and praised the teachers for working hard and maintaining a balance
between their personal and professional lives.
A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the souls
of its people.
(Independence Day and Janmashtami Celebration)
Ahlcon International School always takes a keen interest
in celebrating all the festivals with full grandeur. The virtual celebrations
of Janmashtami and 74th Independence Day started with great zeal and
patriotic fervour through various activities. While some students showed their devotion
for Lord Krishna by dressing up in traditional clothes and decorating the things
loved by him like Mor Mukut(crown), flute, Matki, Sudarshan Chakra, others expressed
their love and pride for the motherland by making Tri-Color masks, T-Shirts,
Kites.
The celebrations continued on 14th August when
students and Activity Teachers presented a special assembly and showcased
different flavours of patriotism through their performances. The programme
started with a song that filled everyone's heart with reverence for the nation
followed by a video that showed the struggle endured by our freedom fighters.
The songs and poems recited by the students and teachers conveyed the stories
of all the unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the
country. The graceful dance performance as a tribute to the motherland won
everyone's heart.
Principal, Mr. Sanjay Yadav conveyed good wishes and greetings to
all students and to their families. While addressing, he talked about India’s
struggle for independence and freedom with the students and urged them to keep
the flag of the nation flying high as the citizens of tomorrow. Headmistress, Ms.
Anju Gupta appreciated the efforts of all the students and teachers. She urged
the children to value the freedom we have got after the sacrifices of many
heroes and advised them to start their journey of being a responsible citizen
and student by adhering to all the netiquettes during their online classes. The flag hoisting was also done on 15th August by
Director Mr. Ashok Pandey within the school premises in the presence of a very
limited gathering.
He and Principal encouraged the youth to be more
dedicated, committed and fulfil their responsibilities in making India a more
healthier, happier and prosperous nation.
As the Covid-19 crisis
caused classes to move completely online, our students from marginalized
backgrounds were left in the lurch due to lack of devices and Internet access. The
digital poverty created a barrier in learning. Without having access to
any device or with the availability of only one device in a family of 2-3
siblings, many students were unable to connect with virtual learning,
assignments and other essential resources to stay on track with their education.
After several meetings and discussions, the class teachers and
management identified those students who, if provided with a device, can
continue with the virtual classes and join their classmates. To ensure
that no student is left behind, a Device Donation Drive(DDD) was initiated in
which teachers volunteered to donate device to help those students who are in need
during these unprecedented times. Three teachers donated the smart phones. After some basic
formalities, an undertaking was signed by the parents and the device was
provided to them. Parents were highly appreciative of this noble initiative.
As we know that digital exclusion can further entrench the existing
learning gap between the disadvantaged and benefitted group so to bring every
child at par with his/her peers, we are still continuing with the campaign and
identifying the needy students.
AN ODE TO THE MARTYRS
Our flag does not fly because the wind
moves it; it flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting
it.”
This quote truly epitomizes the gallantry and
valour of all the Indian soldiers who died fighting in the Kargil war. To
celebrate the 21st anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, the first
virtual special assembly was organized by the students and teachers of Agni
House. A heartfelt homage was paid to the courage and determination of our
armed forces, who steadfastly protected our nation in 1999.
Students
explained the significance of this day by remembering the heroism of our
martyr's through slogans, speeches, videos and dance performances. Many
students dressed up as soldiers and spoke
about the sacrifices made by our war heroes. Various teacher
presentations dedicated to the martyrs
in the form of recitation of self composed poems, dance numbers and
songs added charm to the program. It was a new experience for the parents as
well, because they were witnessing the special assembly for the first time
which generally don't happen during the regular school.
Principal, Mr. Sanjay Yadav appreciated the
efforts and initiatives of the parents and teachers. Headmistress, Ms. Anju
Gupta highlighted that the feeling of patriotism should be inculcated in
children right from the primary level as it will help them in becoming the
responsible citizens.
The whole event rekindled the pride and bravery
of the soldiers and sensitized the students to
remember and appreciate the contribution of the courageous Indian Army in
protecting our nation.

VIRTUAL PTM (PRIMARY SECTION) Education
is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students and enthusiastic
parents
Parent-
Teacher Meeting (PTM) is the most important event which gives teachers and
parents, an opportunity to connect and bond for the benefit of their children.
It allows parents to express and discuss with the teacher, their concerns and
hopes for their ward's future. It is also an occasion for teachers and parents to
discuss the progress of the child.
So, to continue
with the tradition and update the parents about
their child's performance during the online classes, the first ever virtual PTM
of Primary Section for classes 1-5 was conducted on 22nd and 23rd
May,2020 through Microsoft Teams. To avoid any confusion and to give individual
attention to each parent, different time slots were allotted according to their
ward's roll number. The main
purpose of the meet was to create a common platform, where parents and teachers
come together to enrich the student's educational experiences and discuss
various issues, regarding holistic development of the students. Queries related
to teaching pedagogy, evaluation system, holidays homework were addressed.
Parents
were satisfied with the manner in which their wards have settled in the new
normal. They were thankful to all the subject teachers for making the virtual
classes very creative, interesting and giving hands on experience for better
learning of the students.
They
expressed their gratitude to teachers for leaving no stone unturned in the
completion of the syllabus. Many of them shared that they are also attending
all the classes with their ward and understanding the teaching methodology. It is
an opportunity for them to closely observe their child and understand about
his/her strengths and weaknesses. The parents appreciated the initiative taken
by management in this pandemic situation.
Some students
also attended the PTM and they were counseled in the presence of their parents
to develop regular study habits, show good behaviour, to follow a routine and
maintain a balance between work and play during the summer break. Parents were

Children from classes 1 to 5 proved their mathematical ability by participating in Mental Math competitions. The purpose of competitions was to break out of the established patterns in order to look at things in a different manner. Also keeping the SDGs in mind it was taken care that the material used by students was environment friendly and no plastic decorative materials were used.
As rightly said by Albert Einstein, "Creativity is intelligence having fun."
We at Ahlcon believe that creativity is the process of bringing something new into being. Anti - Cracker Diwali
Diwali is the festival that brings good will to all except the environment. Children being the largest consumers of crackers, need to be educated about its harmful after effects to their health and environment. With an aim to spread awareness about firecrackers causing noise and air pollution and numerous health hazards to human beings and animals, students of Primary School of Ahlcon International School took out an Anti-Cracker Rally on 24th September’19 in the school premises.
With the noble aim of celebrating ‘Green Diwali’ students pledged to say ‘No’ to crackers and ‘Yes’ to pollution free environment. The rally saw lots of enthusiasm among the students as they vociferated slogans and addressed their peers, encouraging them to gift our Mother Earth a tree this Diwali instead of harmful smoke of crackers. The young eco warriors carried colourful placards and raised slogans like ‘Say no to crackers and yes to life’ to cultivate a sense of duty towards their environment and society. They went to different areas of the school holding banners and placards denouncing the use of crackers. To conclude the drive, students took an oath to abstain from bursting firecrackers.
A thought provoking assembly was also organized by the students to promote an Eco-friendly Diwali. Various activities such as ‘Diya Decoration’, Candle Decoration’, Making Charts & Greeting cards were held at the school premises. The school wore a festival look as the students celebrated the festival.
The heads addressed the students and said that polluting crackers should not only be avoided but also banned. They urged the children to take the message of not bursting such crackers not only to their families, but also their neighbourhood and adjoining colonies so that this initiative takes the shape of a movement.
GANDHI JAYANTI SPECIAL ASSEMBLY
Class III A conducted assembly on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Children recited a beautiful poem on MAHATMA GANDHI, explaining his struggle for independence. A short biography of Gandhiji was also shown.
Mahatma Gandhi was a noble man. He served the humanity selflessly. These values of Mahatma Gandhi were highlighted through a short skit – ‘Gandhi’s Love for Humanity’.
Gandhiji said, “The earth, the air, the land and the water are not an inheritance from our fore fathers but on loan from our children. Report on Boot Camp
“The Journey of Self Discovery”
Ahlcon believes in providing plethora of wholesome experiences to its teachers through myriads of opportunities in various spheres. Keeping this in view, a 2 days immersion camp was organised at Noor Mahal, Karnal from 29th-30th December,2018. Around 40 teachers participated in the camp and undertook the trajectory in search of some answers about themselves.
Our Principal and mentor Mr. Ashok Pandey believes that learning to teach for the teachers is as important as learning to learn for the learners. In his opinion, learning is about honesty, sincerity, integrity and courage to transform for the betterment of ourselves. He provided us all with the prodigious learning platform and conducted various interactive sessions.
He beautifully explained the phrase-“What got you here…. Won’t get you there”. During the sessions, he elucidated that behavioural problems, not technical skills, are what separate the great from the near great. Incredible results can come from practicing basic behaviours like saying thank you, listening well, unhooking yourselves from the old outgrown ideas, thinking before you speak, and apologizing for your mistakes.
Various activities and team building exercises were done to highlight the importance of factors like gratitude, listening, purpose, passion, empathy in one’s life and how they can contribute in shaping an individual’s personality both professionally and personally .The first step to change is wanting to change and this camp truly proved to be the maiden act towards our transformation.
